how to do this? we'd like to eliminate snare buzz completely . . . .

please no comments like turn snares off. we're recording all instruments live at once.

thanks

Are you going to record amps in the same room as the drums? If that's the case, you have no hope of eliminating buzz as one instrument is sure to hit a frequency that will rattle the snares. Isolate the amps if you can and monitor with headphones.

If its just about buzz from within the kit itself, then tuning is usually the answer. A well tuned kit rarely produces snare buzz, especially if the snare drum has a decent snare bed. Tune the snare to a pitch that is not represented anywhere else in the kit. The bottom head should be fairly tight. Almost stiff.

A little buzz is OK, btw. After all, that's what a snare is suppose to sound like. Don't tighten the snares to where they're choked or the drum will sound like crap in the recording.

And most of all: DON'T USE TAPE!! :)

Do you have a dampening ring on the snare head? If not, DO IT. Other than that, it's like asking "how do you remove all breath sounds from a vocal track?" Some is good, it tells the ear it's authentic.
