Recording Monitor Mix Levels Too High

I am using Sonar and a Roland VM3001Pro. When overdub recording the current instrument is too loud in the mix that I am missing cues. Muting the channels on the mixer helped but it is still too loud. I must be missing something here. If I lower the Sonar volume in Track view to say -50 dB the volume recorded is not affected. This means I need to adjust the monitor mix while recording in the mixer? Thanks a lot.
 
forgive me if you already know this... but the input levels for your "current" instrument (I assume this means the live instrument you are playing) are controlled by your soundcard's mixer, not by cakewalk. Depending on what soundcard you own, the soundcard mixer may be accessed differently. Typically the "line-in" level on the soundcard mixer controls your instrument's input level to Sonar, check it and adjust accordingly.
