Yeah, that is right. You need to have a gate which can react quickly, but most decent ones can do it.
As for the triggers I use, you get THIS from Rat Shack, take out the piezo crystal, and put a female quarter inch jack on the end of the leads. You plug that into the key input on your gate, and attach the crystal to the drum head with transfer tape (or, if you can get it, the stuff that we used to use for hot dots in guitars). That's it, and it works great.
