Recording Bass On Fostex Vf-160 (ex)

I just can't get a decent bass sound for the Fostex 160. I'm using a 1964 Fender Precision that I bought right out of college and used ever since. I have a Boss foot pedal and I just ordered a Behringer V-bass unit but it hasn't arrived yet. I'm looking for some way to get a decent bass sound on the recorder. Can anyone help..?
 
The Behri unit should work fine and provide you with a lot of control and a wide pallet of tones/effects. Many bassists use Tech21 SansAmps. DI is trickier and can be ultimately more expensive for bass than for other instruments---a lot of DI mud want to reside in the low frequencies. An ART Studio MP (~$30) is either adored or despised. I have a friend who uses an Avalon DI (~$500) with a rack setup ($???)for recording but gigs live with an ART MPC (~$100).
