I am going to record my daughters flute solo for a song I wrote her mom.
Anyone got any tips or tricks that may be helpful?

Do you always call her "my daughter's mom"?

And basically, there are two approaches that I have tried. Either you set the mic up like you were recording lead vocals (cuts through the mix better, but sounds slightly unnatural) or you record from several (like 5-6) feet away for a more natural result. But you should be aware of the effect the room has on the tone. If necessary, try different rooms.

Try playing a short piece of music that has the range and general style that you are eventually going to record (This saves you over playing the piece you want to eventually record) Write down all the positions and settings used for each take. Come back to these recordings the next day and use your ears to make the decision as to the best position and settings for your particular needs.

Keep the microphone slightly above the face of the flautist to avoid it being directly in line with the embouchure hole - or use a wind-screen, or do both…
