Read this if you're ordering a Fireface 800

It seems that some units (mine included) shipped with less than stellar firewire cables.

You will notice the following if this is the case with yours (PC):

Everything installs correctly, device shows up in device manager.
The RME icon in the tray is present, meaning the driver is working properly.
You cannot open the settings dialog.
You cannot complete a BIOS flash of the unit.
You probably can't playback or record.

Save yourself some time, change the cable first. I spent 5 - 6 hours, before I tried it

You'd expect such an expensive unit to come with decent cables
Mine came with a working cable. Glad you hear you've found the problem.
It's a nice piece of equipment. I love how I can switch between laptop and PC.

Stuff like that happens sometimes to great companies as well as shoddy ones. They may have gotten a bad batch of cables from an OEM supplier or something. That is the kind of item that would probably not be tested by an RME QC worker.
