Question about cheapo soundcard

I am trying to do some recording on my PC and I'm having trouble. Maybe someone here can help.

I'm running a Yamaha DS-XG soundcard (YMF724 chipset), and I am unable to record using the line input jack. The signal is passing through to the line out jack (I can hear it in the 'phones), but will not record.

I can record via the mic in jack, but the sound doesn't pass through and the quality is crap.

I've screwed with the settings in the Windows mixer with no results.

Here's the rest of my set up, in case it matters:

AMD K6-2 400
128M RAM
20G HD
Win 98SE
Behringer MXB1002 Mixer (I know, I know)
Shure SM-57
