I am in a situation where, i have non-powered speakers and just need a mixer, but i don't want a powered mixer, should i use the speakers for something else and buy new powered speakers along with the mixer...or get a power amp with the mixer, i am leaning towards the power amp desicion, good choice?

I tend to lean towards power amps - I'm not a big fan of most crossovers in powered monitors, and with a power amp and a speaker selector switch you can run your A set and your B set (or even a set in another room) from the same amp.

I'm a big fan of Halfer amps if that helps...

If you like your speakers and feel you can mix well with them buy a power amp. If they aren't very good to begin with, you can either buy a power amp and a better set of speakers or get some powered speakers. I would audition as many as I could and worry more about which ones I like most and could afford rather than if they are powered or not.

Of course, having a power amp in the studio can come in real handy.

Either way, the mixer should be a seperate issue, and powered mixers aren't favored for recording.
