preamp for 8 track recording?

hey

i am recording with a tascam 688 8track,
sadly the volume is very low so i have
another recorder in the middle to make
it a little bit louder. still i have to
turn up everything on the 8 track
to get a louder sound. there is lots of
background noise and static sound, when
i turn up the volume, on the finished
recording. i guess thats because everything
is turned up on the 8 track right? would
it help to get a preamp to put before
the 8 track plug in to make it louder?
it would then be possible to turn down
the volume knobs on the 8 track and minimize
the noise, right?
any preamps you guys recommend?

thanks,
sp

Methinks you are doing something not quite Kosher! That is, your 688 should be able to record. I'm assuming that you are using tape? I used to use a Tascam 488 and I had plenty of volume; however, as of late, Tascam is building boxes/cassettes that do not have high quality electronics in them; THEY MAKE NOISE, as did my 488.

Suggest you check your manual or get Tascam on line and shoot them some questions.

A mic preamp will give you more warmth and boost without using the pre-amps on your 688; that might cut down on the noise.

Keep twiddling the dials,
