Pre amp which mics??

There is a lot of discussion about mic pre amps on this forum but one thing I am curious about is which mics would benifit from an external pre amp. I understand condenser mics would but what about say SM57's on snare and toms? Is the kick drum mic amped also? If I use a Sm57 on a guitar cab should it be pre amped?? Thanks!

All mics need a preamp. Most condensors also need a preamp with phantom power.

Most mixers and all in one recorders have built in preamps but an external preamp might give you better quality depending on the preamp used.
