powering headphones

in the world of "lets smack it and that should fix it" that could possibly work. but i would keep it pretty low. but unless my headphones were extremely cheap, i wouldnt want to try it and kill the headphones and possibly my ears. think about getting something small like one of those art headphone amps or something thats about 50 bucks. i have a behringer powerplay HA4700 for a headphone amp and that was $99 bucks. it has 4 inputs in the front and some more in the back. the front inputs have treble, bass and various other nuances.

if you keep the volumes low, could you power headphones using the speaker jacks of a regular amplifier?
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that an impedence mismatch may mess with, among other things, the tone or freq balance of the signal. Of course the other thing, as you imply, is that you could blow your headphone drivers if you crank it too hard by mistake - hopefully they're not on your head if that happens.
