pots switch replacement

Hey,
I'm replacing my 500k pots switch...and what I picked up from the store is a...mini pots switch...the base of it is a lot smaller then the pots I'm replacing it with, is there a difference in the normal (.75 inch diameter one) to the mini one(looks a lot smaller in the base of it compared to other one)?
