Ok so here is my current setup:

Mackie 1220 Onyx Mixer with firewire
Sonar
Laptop

I really want to switch to protools, and I really am considering the Digi 003. My big concern is that it only has 4 mic pre's. I'm definitely going to use more than 4 mics at some time in the future, most likely for drumset (or maybe multi-tracking a whole band live, whatever).

Here is my question: since the 003 has 8 total inputs, but only 4 pre's, can I use my Onyx's 4 pre's and route them to the other 4 channels on the digi?

If the answer to the previous question is yes, then how should I go about that? As far as I can tell there are two possibilities: 1) Use the channel inserts (post gain, pre EQ) on the back and route that straight to the digi and 2) use the "Recording Out" connector. I've never used this connector, but I believe it is essentially used to create separate mixes for separate people, live or in the studio (it sort of resembles the old printer cables hook-ups). I was thinking I might be able to get some piece of hardware that could handle that type of connection and take the outputs from that into the digi 003. I really don't even know if that's possible

Let me know if you have any ideas!!
Thanks!
