Portable Recorder -> Computer Purchase

Was not sure what forum to put this in, but here goes.

I currently have a Fostex MR-8 but it only comes with 128M flash card.

I need a portable recorder to take on the road for interviews, and is not limited by memory (i.e. needs at least a 20Gig HD, VF80 for example)

2 track with phantom power a must. and need to be able to easily export to computer for editing.

Any thoughts or things I need to look for?
TIA,

I'm not sure that you can find a cost-effective, portable field recorder with a 20GB drive:

You might try a laptop or something built for home studio use (Fostex vf16/160), but I get the sense you are looking for something smaller and more convenient. There are DAT and mini-disk recorders used in the ENG (Electronic News Gathering) business, but your limited to whatever a typical DAT or mini-disk holds. The other option would be a portable CD recorder like the ones made by Marrantz:

dwillis,

It doesn't have to be "extremely portable" i.e. I will have power anywhere I do interviews. Mainly in churches and peoples houses

I was looking at the vf80 or the vf160. Or some of the zoom and boss recorders.

The Fostex VF series are pretty solid stand-alone recorders. I've used the VF16 for several years without problems. They have phantom power, plenty of tracks, and ample hard drive storage space. I record my VF16 to a Mac via ADAT or TOSLINK, but I believe there is a WAV export function via SCSI for PC's. (Check out VF16.com for plenty of user information on the VF16/160 series or this BBS under the Fostex equipment users forum.) The only downside that I can see would be drive noise if you place your interview mic too close to the VF16/160.
