Portable Digital Recorders

E2009

New member
Hello,
I would like to buy a digital recorder to record nature sounds, traffic sound. I read reviews on the MIcro track II, H2, H4N. I will use the internal mics and an external mic as well. What is a better choice from a view point of the following parameters:

1. recording sound quality
2. noise
3. using an external mic
3. Internal microphones reception and quality

Thanks ahead.

I've been using a H2 it does a very good job.
It will probably do just a good of job as the H4.

I will testify to the ruggedness of this little gem.
It has been abused more than any other piece of
equipment I own and just keeps on ticking.

This little thing has been knocked off of tables,
stands, etc at least 6 times not even a scratch.

bought the H4N

Hello everybody,
I bought the ZOOM H4N. good sound quality. Also the internal microphones are sensitive enough to catch sounds of the surrounding (nature, ambient,...) so there is no need for a stereo sensitive condenser (for now). I am happy with it. The only thing I will have to get is a dead cat wind shield for the mic.

some folks in this forum recommended the H4N to me and i've used it with a good deal of success for the applications you described (field sounds, outdoor recording, etc).
if you plan on ever using the HI-Z inputs to record bass or guitar, though, you may want to check out this thread first (from the Zoom forum):

it details a grounding problem present with the mains adaptor.
happy hunting!
