Please help with stereo mic bar

Hi,

I'm sure this is a idiotic question, but this is my first time to record. My problem is with the stereo mic bar I've screwed onto my "boom" - It has two bolts which allow you to screw on the mic holders, but I can't seem to screw the mic holders on all the way (the mic bar bolts are a bit longer than the mic holder shaft they screw into), so both bolts have a lot of play - is this how it should be? Or do I need to get something to be able to tighten them down? Many thanks for any advice!
 
No, that doesn't sound normal. Either your stereo bar is screwy (pun intended), or your mounts are. Try tightening with a wrench, as there may be a small metal burr inside your mount that is not allowing you to tighten it fully. If that doesn't do it, you may need to grind a little off the top of the stereo bar screw.
