Pitch Bend

Is there a difference between a pitch bend that moves up and down, and the kind that moves up,down, left, right all over.Because i was told if you play with the bend level its all tyhe same.

Yo Jamal: [there once was a great piano jazz player named Ahmad Jamal]

Don't know what kind of keyboard you are talking about but the pitch bend is usually on a "wheel" that can be pushed up or down and, thus, creating a gliss sound that moves one way or the other, kind of like running your fingers across the keys of a piano or synth starting with the lowest note going up or from the top coming down.

Pitch bend is adjustable on most keyboards and some nice stuff can be done with it, especially to get into a tune, accent a measure or two or end a tune.

Keep bending your pitch.

Some keyboards have pitchbends.
Some have pitchbends and modulation wheels.
Some have pitchbends with modulation switches.
Some have joysticks.
Some have touchpads.
Some have nothing.

And they all work differently, and many of them can be assigned to do other than pitchbend and so on.

So the answer is: Yes, the kind that moves sideways, move sideways, and theones that move up and down move up and down, and, well, you get the point....

Jamal,

I think that what you're referring to is the type of pitch bend "joysticks" that Korg and Roland uses on their boards. To answer your question, NO, their is no difference in the sounds that you can produce with either type of pitch bend (joystick or wheel pitch bend).

The only difference in what you can produce is that with the "joystick" style pitch bend controllers, the modulation is also on the same controller. The pitch bend is usually "up and down" the joystick while the modulation is "left to right". So for live solo keyboard stuff the joystick allows the player to do some solo expression with bends and modulation a bit easier, because the modulation and pitch bends are on one stick. But in the sequencing world where you might want to put the modulation "on" and leave it "on", the separate pitch wheel and modulation wheel does this a bit better. So with your DJX, the pitch bending is the same. For sequencing work, you actually have a bit more control with the separate pitch/modulation wheel controls.
