pci card recommendations

Hello, I've done some research. I'm a lower budget home recording/singing/guitar person. I want at least 4 inputs, more if I can afford it, plus the ability to hook up my Sony DAT (digital) too.

Can I get a decent soundcard for under $500 that doesn't have the cords all bundled up?

A box seems handier for placing on the desktop.

What are the recommendations in terms of sound reproduction?

okay okay

so it's been discussed. But that is a pretty valuable resource. Except I'm still confused. I picked a card, but now mixers have me challenged.

I wrote zzoundz.com, but I was curious - $200 range, I like the Mackie, DFX6, but I can't tell if I can get 4 lines back to computer with that, plus monitor the sound.

I also like the yamaha MG124 12 channel/4 bus.

I'm not sure if Mackie is stronger/better? And which would serve me if I want to take it to small performance level in addition to the recording?
