Hey guys,
can I safely power passive monitors with a good quality Denon stereo receiver?
Thanks

It all depends on the numbers...what power handling are the speakers (watts RMS) and ? What resistance are they (ohms)?, what does the Denon put out power wise? Give us some details and we'll get ya sorted out. :D

I don't think there'd be any problem. I did it for years with various receivers.

The tone controls present an issue... where do you set them?

I just put on the best recorded music I could find and set the tone controls to sound good with that, and then made marks on the receiver where the knobs were.

thane1200 asks for information that would allow a definitive answer.

but the short answer is 'yes'.

generally speaking, you can hook up passive speakers to a receiver without undue concern.

it's best if you bypass the preamp and tone controlls entirely... look on the back for apreamp out/power amp in connector... they usually have i little jumper between the two... use that if at all possible... i doubt power is going to be an issue...

specs

The Denon is 50 watts per channel, 8-16 Ohms. The speakers are 75 watts program, 4-6 ohms nominal.
Thanks
