Open Labs, Neko...

I Got Riffs

I was just checking out some demo's if these products and they're looking pretty cool to me. The only question I have is are they really worth $7,000? Their catch phrase is something like "A laptop is not made for producing music, but the Neko is." That sounds very appealing to someone like me that spent very little on a PC and suffers the consequences in the form of buffer underruns.

My computer is a PC with 4G RAM, Vista, not sure what kind of processor, but nothing too impressive... cost me about $400.

Most of the music I make runs 4 or 5 VST's at once - piano, drums(with my own WAV's), orchestral stuff... and maybe 3 or 4 guitar and bass audio tracks. So it's relatively basic stuff and occasionally if I want to add something else, I'll start to get latency problems and have to remind myself that it's my own fault for not spending a bit more.

So I kind of assume that if I shell out $2,000 for a new computer with Windows 7 and a dual quad-core whatever, then I'll have something that may as well have been "made for music production".

My point is that if so many professional musicians produce music on PC's or Mac's, then is something like this really that much different?

Nope. Not at all. Openlabs is just a PC (running windows) in a box with a keyboard, controllers, monitor, and a low to mid range audio interface. For seven grand, you could build/buy 2 or 3 systems that would match or exceed what this is
