When I'm recording my drum machine (Boss DR-880) into my PC, should I use the preamp on my soundcard (WamiRack 24)? I don't have a mixer or anything...

I've always opted against the preamp, but I'm suprised by how much I have to turn up the volume on the 880, as well as on my soundcard, to get a decent input level. Same problem with other direct instruments (keyboard, sound modules, etc).

Let me know your thoughts...

You should not need to use the preamp.

I have the gain on all of my rack gear (synths, etc) pretty much at full tilt. I record them at line ins (unless I specifically want to use a preamp for colour).
