Has anyone had any luck/experience with pedal noise gates for guitar for live use? My Strat makes an ungodly hum (even though it is well shielded) when I have my overdrive pedal on. Do they suck much tone?

They shouldn't. They're basically an on-off switch, straight pipe with no tone of its own. Put it first in your signal chain. The overdrive acts as a compressor with lots of makeup gain, that's why the hum is so loud.
