New School Equipment List

Goals
To setup a studio that is ideal for education
To have the studio be functional for upper-end recording.
To have the portability to record, regardless of their location.
To design a facility that is high efficiency, and low cost.

*I am a dealer at my music store and got a catalog for cables so those prices are what I will pay at dealer cost, they are braided gold plated neutrik cables.

*The rest of my cost are just pretty much from sweetwater or similar sites.

Good call on the Genelec/Mackie combination. Your prices look like they are for single speakers though. Is an educational discount that big?

I think I am going to have to cut a pair of speakers, which would you recommend. The Mackies or the Genelecs?

If you are paying over $600 per speaker, how is that an educational discount? That's what I paid for my Mackies!

I use the Mackie HR824 along with a pair of KRK V4's. The V4's were under $500 for the pair, and I love them. It's great to have a second set of different sized monitors to switch to for reference.

In your case, I think you want a pair that have an 8" woofer as your main speakers. If you get a second set it should be something different and probably smaller, like the V4's or similar.

There's a company called Dynaudio that makes good speakers. You might want to check and see what the BM 15A costs. It has a 9" woofer.

I have some friends that use Event ASP8's in their studio and they love them big time. They cost about the same as the Mackie's and are also worth considering.

But I do like my Mackie's, although I really wouldn't want to use them without a second set of monitors for reference. But that's just me perhaps.

We have not decided where to actually buy equipment, thus I have not called any one place to find out what the educational discounts are. The only discounts I have seen are on software because sweetwater advertises it that way.

I know my old school re-invested a major amount of money into their studio, and got a decent price from a local company that did the whole lot for them. You may want to look at that rather than sweetwater or MF or whatever.

Also, you've left no budget for acoustic, nor taking into account how you're setting all this up - surely you'll need some sort of snake to take all your xlrs from your live room thru to the control room? And then squirting to cover the snake, drilling holes or whatever.

For the acoustic, I'd do some research into DIY'ing it - there is a suprising difference you can make by building a few simple acoustic treatment. I just built 10 broadband absorbers, and simply randomly throwing them up in my room has made a drastic difference!! You can almost certainly get more "|bang for the buck" building your own traps and reflectors - as long as yer handy with a saw!

good luck :)

this is the job security setup. Such a personalized and eclectic gearlist means they aint gettin NOONE else to run this. Good thinking

I left the snake off because I am having one custom built for a good price since my store deals cbi. There is a separate budget for acoustic treatment and building cost so I do not have to worry about that.

Thanks.

(The gear list is not toooo eclectic, but I want to make it unique.

Pay very close attention as this will be the best damn advice you are going to get today.

This computer system is based on a Intel CORE 2 DUO E6600 2.4G (1066Mhz) processor / Intel 975X chipset with 4GB of RAM. It has a Sony dual layer DVD, a WD 320GB HDD, a WD 80GB HDD, a nVidia GF7600GT 256MB video adapter, running a copy of Windows XP professional (I can't recommend Vista at this time). The whole thing is packaged in a Norco rack case using a 600w CoolerMaster power supply with room for 6 hot swappable drive bays (you'll only be using one). There are two 19" Viewsonic monitors in the config. Your cost is approx. $2,100 plus tax and shipping. You do NOT have to build it, that is done for you and the cost is included in the total.

Fax the quoted system (below) to MWAVE at 909-839-7681. Explain that only the 320GB drive is to go into the hot swap array, the 80GB HDD will hold the OS and reside inside of the case (unless, of course, you want it to).

I am not affiliated with MWAVE in any way, shape, or form, and I am not making one thin dime for providing this. I just hate to see people pay WAY WAY WAY more than they have to for 'music' computers from audio equipment vendors.

Luck

Thanks a lot, I was not going to go with a vendor box, but I did not know about mwave, looks very cool. I have put a few small boxes together but did not feel comfortable doing it my self so I was stuck. Now I am not. I will look into.

Thanks Again.

Have you looked at price-per-input-channel, comparing a 003 with anything M-audio? it might perhaps be cheaper to get some M-audio adat i/o with some stand-alone preamps/converters, rather than get the 003?
