New Project Studio

After 3 years of reading....drooling....and budgeting....I pulled the trigger....
I decided to go w/ a Roland 2480CD .......and eventually put together a PC soon....I have been using my 4-track for years and hopefully on Friday FED-EX will bring me my VS....

Hopefully someone can give me some feedback (not an argument that I should of went w/ a PC...)

My little studio right now I have:

Mackie 1604-VLZ pro 16 ch mixer
4 SM57
2 SM58
Tascam 4-track portastudio ...(Kissing this goodbye....had some fun w/ this though)
2 mic stands...(some broomsticks taped to chairs work as my others)

As far as Instruments:
2 bass guitars (one fretless Fender Jazz/ the other w/ active p/u)
1 Am. Stand. Strat..
2 Les Pauls (one epihone/the other which plays and sounds better is a no namer)
2 acoustics (one Takamine/ the other an epiphone)
1 mandolin
1 Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp
1 Crate bass amp
1 Crate guitar tube amp (really dirty...not a big fan of this one)

NOW....Heres what I bought yesterday...Looking for feedback on the basis of reading what I had (above) and what I'm getting via FED-EX (hopefully tomm.)

Roland VS-2480CD
EVENT TR8 monitors
C1000 mic
C3000B Mic...(Bought these 2 as a pkg deal...really good price
Korg 1000 rack tuner (needed a tuner badly..have had a little sabine hand held I bought for $40.00 years and years ago...Its been dropped so many times..)
Behringer Pro Headphone AMP
4 pairs of Nady headphones (not great phones but its a start)
New Rack/Mixer stand
bunch of new Cables
6 mic stands
2 monitor stands

Some other small things as well...All totaling a hair under $3900..I looked and looked for the best deals...around...

Did I do good? (It was a tough choice between PC and the VS but in my research....using both (tandem) seems to be great...and gimme some time I will have a PC-DAW soon...)

Sounds great

It's not what you have, it's what you do with it that counts and it sounds like you have plenty to get started.. Definetly plan on a DAW down the road, but for now I would say you are all set..

you waited 3 years?! That would have driven me crazy!

And you got yourself a very powerful system in the VS2480. I always thought the Roland series was the easiest of the hard disk recorders to learn. I used to sell people the yamaha AW4416 and invariably they'd come back to swap it for the roland after discovering the fairly steep learning curve.

3 years of reading// and suffering w/ my 4-track...I made some killer recordings but I can now afford (Credit is a wonderful thing) to step up to digital....

I was considering the 4416 but I felt more comfortable w/ the 2480CD....

I concentrated on playing the guitar...discipline w/ playing w/ other musicians etc...

the 3 years went quick but after I did my tax returns this year...and reading the forums on this site and some others...I said what the hell!!!!...

I'm starting the east coast Shang-Gri-Lah

I think you setup is good, except the mics. You have six mics (57s and 58s) that are basically the same mic, and you have two of my least favorite (harsh sounding and strident) condenser mics (C1000 and C3000B). Honestly, you spent three years researching and this is the mic combo you came up with? You obviously didn't do your research at this website. I don't know how much you paid for these two mics, but for the same price you could probably have gotten an AT 4033 (or 4040 which I haven't heard but the people who have them here love them) and a pair of MC012s--much better mics IMO.

Here are some mics you should consider. They are generally accepted as very good budget mics. The C1000 and C300B are not. I'm referring you to Steve's Mojopie website because his opinion is very respected and the reviews on his site generally reflect the opinions of the experienced folks on this BBS.

Yeah, you did fine. Surprisingly fine when considering that you bought everything at once.

Usually it's a good idea to upgrade on thing at a time. Because when you buy better monitors, you'll get more of an idea what's lacking with your mics, and so on... :)

Geez, are people still buying the C-1000's? I thought that when they changed the color that they'd just run out of "blue" and didn't think they'd be selling them long enough to buy more.

I'd go on and on about a shootout I held at JEM a few years ago - The Regional Manager of Guitar Center came in and we set up a bunch of pairs - Oktavas, Nuemanns, Sennheisers, CADs, Shure SM-57 (gotta have a little fun), yada, yada, AND a pair of C-1000's.

Let's just say that after the shootout, we "mysteriously lost" our C-1000's... The only thing I've ever put in front of them that I actually liked was a harp. Catgut - not a Celtic harp with steel strings - Oh no - Never... I'd rather use a '57... Even though the harp was okay, the ever-cheapie Oktava MC012 blew that away...

Okay enough C-1000 bashing for one night. Sorry...

Hey....theres gotta be some people who like the C1000...but who knows....

anyways..... I guess I'll learn from my mistakes....

..BTW....When this band I was in recorded a few songs @ this dudes studio...he raved about the C1000....he used it as an overhead for the drums and I think to record an acoustic guitar track....

all I know is that it sounded OK....not great..(I don't think I'm experienced enough to start comparing mics....but I know what I heard.........

Thanx for the feed-back!!

The W. S. Wallcott Medicine Show....

If you got a good price on the c1000, who cares? If you end up hating it, sell it to some sucker on eBay! :)

Keep the box. ;)

Sounds like you have everything you need to getstarted, however,
I would advise that you save yourself from future embarrassment
by getting rid of that fretless jazz bass asap. What if you get a really good bassist in the studio?Do you expect him to play that POS?P.M. me your address and I will drop my Cort by and haul
the fretless off,free of charge.

I've had some great shows w/ that bass........I won't argue that it is a POS...but I can tell you playing and learning on that fretless has been probably the best "ear instruction" I think I will ever get......

Growing up I was always the "really good" guitar player, but the other guys played the bass like $h!+....so I volunteered, went out and bought that POS....That guitar has seen alot....and taught me alot.....forced me to learn to hit the right notes.....Very unforgiving....I cant trade you that , but how bout a C1000s?
