New mics, fishing for comments

My wife (being the sweetheart she is) gave me a couple of new mics for Christmas. I'm Just wondering if anyone has experience with either and can tell me if she did me a favor or if she got fooled by a salesman.

mic 1, MXL 990 stereo condenser
mic 2,Apex 435 Lg. diaphram condenser

I haven't had the occasion to use either yet, I'm hoping someone can point me toward the best use for each, thanks
 
IMHO, the 435 is a great mic for modding. It's easy to open up and it's all thru-hole construction, so it's actually pretty easy to replace components. Swapping the coupling capacitor with a higher quality cap is a pretty easy change that can make a noticeable improvement for about two bucks and three minutes with a soldering iron. You'll probably find this best used as a vocal mic. Cut a little in the upper mids with EQ, IIRC.

I'm not familiar with the 990 Stereo, so I can't say much about it.
