Hi all,
I have tinkered with cubase sx3 and my steinberg M14 usb interface but because i was having a few problems understanding a few basics i decided to buy a digital multitracker to start learning the basics with.

I bought a BOSS BR 1180CD and have had a fantastic time and learnt loads about setting up, mixing and levels etc.....BUT ,i have found that i desperatly need more than the 8 tracks i am limited to with the br1180cd.

I was going to use my laptop, , 2.4ghz amd athlon and 2gb of ram , , but my desktop is a 3.4ghz Pentium D dual core and 2gb of ram , so i thought , lets use the desktop instead.
Anyhows , , i have decided to make another pc and use it solely as a DAW.

I have bought an ASUS P5Q PRO motherboard, and 4GB of PC2 8500 CORSAIR RAM to start with. A decent 24" monitor , graphics card and big sata drives etc are all to come.

The motherboard can take up to quad core processors on the 775 skt, and as such will also accept the 3ghz P4 cpu i have spare , and the dual core i have in my desktop. I will still be using my STEINBERG M14 until i can get a firewire interface.

What i would like to know is , , , , ,will this set up be good enough to start recording properly with cubase , proper 20 or 30 track projects ? ? ?

And just out of intrest.. I know having a seperate daw is the pro thing to do, but how many people actually use their everyday pc for recording as well ? ? ?

In other words , if i build this pc with the asus p5q pro and dump a quad core with 4 to 6gb of ram , , will i get away with using it as my main internet pc, , , AND as a PRO DAW ? ?

I hope this all makes sence to someone , , with the laptop, i will now have 3 big computers around , if i can get a pro daw and an internet everyday pc built into one case it would make life so much easier.

You should do quite well with that. Yeah many people think that you need a specially prepared computer to record with. This simply is not true. A computer is a computer. They all use hard drives, motherboards, graphics cards, sound cards, etc.

I have one computer that I use for everything. Although everything to me only means checking email, web surfing, word processing, photo editing, and recording.

My do-it-all computer works great.

But do be careful about the online spyware problem. Dump Internet Explorer if you surf the web. It supports Active-X and VB Script, both which spyware writers exploit to infiltrate your machine.

Use Opera instead. It's much more secure, doesn't support Active-X or VB Script, is fully customizable, and is fast.

Be careful which sites you visit also. Porn sites, wallpaper sites, and cheat code sites all carry malware.
