Never done this before...

Hey all

So I've always had a passion for music, but never really tried to really record myself singing (because I don't think I can sing very well). This was just an experiment using some trial software... What tips would you guys have to improve the mix?

Also, any tips to avoid going flat on every other note? This was only one take (thats why I don't know the song that well) but meh. I think using pitch correction is cheating, and if I have to use it to sound good then I might as well give up :spank:

Thanks in advance!

And another song, hoping for general comment. I think my vocals sound better in this one, perhaps because I wasn't wearing headphones?

right well you cant sing and I dont drink beer....OK I love beer and you can sing very well I was confused for a second

your vocals pitch or not pitch corrected sounded fine to me, you've got a great voice

I thought the instrumentation was a little muffled and missing some "sparkle" but Im of the daw and on my internet PC..still a bit wider panning and look at the lower mid frequencies would probably clear that up...

nice job all in all imho...welcome aboard :)

yeah, the difference between the two tracks is minimal. If you struggle with going flat and don't want to use autotune you could try laying down your vocal, autotune it, pan it hard to one ear with cans. Leave the other ear open to air while you record a new vocal track. May help you stay on pitch, and it's not really cheating. Welcome to the mp3 clinic.

I think you have a good voice, and you sing very well, especially since that was one take. I'm not too sure about how other people feel about it, but for me, I don't think it's "cheating" to re-record individual lines if you think they are flat or they bother you. I do it all the time and then put together a compilation of the best takes to make my vocal tracks...I think other people do the same thing :)

Good luck!

I can't tell exactly what the auto tuner is doing but the one without it I can hear you go flat very slightly but it has a nice style to it.

Wow thanks guys for the positive comments. I guess that saying is true, you're your own worst critic.

Fd2blck - I think that's kind of the point... pitch correction is supposed to be transparent (unless you're t-pain) :P For example this sounds great, but obviously pitch corrected
Others - Thanks for the compliments. I really don't like the tone of my voice at all, but meh. Time to start working on a song with instruments in it!
