Need to buy a mic + pre for vocal and instrument recording

I need to get a mic for recording vocals and alto sax. I am looking for something versatile but especially good for these two applications. I am thinking about the AKG 414. I am also considering upgrading my mic pre for this. If I do go with the 414, which model should I look for? I can spend up to $1k on the mic. What would a good mic pre be to go along with this that is reasonably affordable? Thanks.

I think I'm saving up for an AKG 414.
What are you recording with?
