My studio is 24 by 24 eith 8 foot ceilings. Is the low ceiling going to be a problem and if so is there a way to remedy the problem without raising the ceiling? Thanks, Don
Ouch. A perfectly square room with floor/ceiling dimensions that divide equally into the wall dimensions. You're looking at some serious standing wave problems. Go to John Sayers recording manual. It's at his site or http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html . Print it out and study it. Do a search on this forum for "standing waves" or "room modes".
Yup - low 8' ceilings are a problem. When you stand in the middle of the room the closest wall to you is...the ceiling. I recommend you wipe it out with a heavy dose of rigid fibreglass insulation. You can easily break up the angles on the walls but the ceiling is a real problem. Perhaps a combination of absorbers and diffusers on the ceiling will give you a variety of acoustic spaces.
BTW - with regard to the square room it is interesting to note the number of pro control rooms that actually start out as a square. Tom Hidley's do and I recently saw one that was a huuge installation yet started out as a square. It's what you do within the square that really counts.
