Need PC/part recommendations....

Hey guys,

I'd like to buy or piece together a screaming PC that will last me a while in terms of processing power.
I only really have the need to track at most 4 tracks at a time...usually only 1 or 2. However, I'd like to have
more processing power for running lots of plugins while mixing, etc. DAW - mostly Reaper, somtimes Ableton, Sonar.
This machine will be setup as bare bones - OS, DAW, no antivirus, etc. I'd like to spend $1K or less (prefer best bang
for $)

What do you recommend for my needs and use with Reaper? What are some great deals today?

My current setup -

Dell XPS M1710 laptop (Duo Core - T7200 at 2GHz) 2GB RAM
RME Fireface800

Thanks!

You can put together an i7 for around a grand. I purchased my parts for mine at Micro Center. You can get kits at Newegg.com. That's all I got. :)

I don't know the price difference but I run a Q9550 w/ 8gb ram @ 1066.

Built it a few years ago for very little and I have absolutely no need to be upgrading.

I know it's officially old technology, but it still screams just fine.

TBH, you're daw pc doesn't have to be cutting edge like in the old days.
I'd work away on an old E6600 if i had to.

Since your in Denver, do you mind sharing a parts list? I couldn't find kits on Newegg, but it'd be nice to just go down to MC and buy all the components.

Here is what I got. i7 with 2 1TB drives in RAID1. 8GB ram. I use 2 1TB external drives for audio streaming/backup. You could get another of the $59.99 Seagates for internal audio drive. Not included in this list. Here is my purchase list with MC #'s:

1-487181 Thermal TAV3 Black Gaming Chassis $37.99 CASE
1-47392 Coolmaster Elite Power 460w PSU $44.99 POWER SUPPLY
2-646901 Seagate 1TB 3.5" SATA 7200 $119.98 HARD DRIVES
1-102889 Corsair 8GB 2X4 D3 1333 C9 DIMM $89.99 RAM
1-419341 MS OEM MIN7 Home Pro 64-bit $109.99 OS
1-482513 MSI HD5450 1GB D3 PCIE PL DVH $39.99 VIDEO CARD
1-295162 Intel BOXDH67CLB3 1155 ATX $79.99 MOTHER BOARD
1-200196 INTEL BOX C17 2600 $249.99 CPU

$772 for the setup. I added some other things like KVM switch and a monitor and various crap that brought it to $1000

Motherboard has firewire as well as USB3.0 and 2.0.

This thing boots up in 32 seconds and has way more power than I really need. Kinda the idea. The fan in the cheapie case is large and quite quiet. You can add more slower speed fans if wish for quieter. Space for like 4 more fans. I like the RAID1 setup, as had a bad experience with a drive failure, and took two days to reinstall everything. Now, if I lose a drive, everything is on the second drive. :D

Save your self the future hassle and buy the Mac now...and here come the molotov cocktails....
