need more line ins for my digi 002 rack... so i can get more on separate tracks.. i guess the only way would be to go optical... this is a new language to me.. i need about 4... is thier somethin out thier.. ( i dont need preamps) .. that can connect to my digi rack and be used at the same time with the 8 analog ins? i hope so.. budget is around 400...thx in advance . - LBC

you'd be hard pressed to find an 8ch adat converter for $400.

My advice would be to pick up a really really cheap Alesis Adat Lx20 on ebay. You can use it as an optical interface and would suit your needs since you don't need preamps either. You could probably find one on ebay for 150. You don't even need a working adat, just one that powers up is fine.

you have 8 line level ins on the 002 if you choose not to use the 4 mic pre's. (you'll have only 4 line level ins if you are using the 4 pre's at the same time)..obviously you already know this.

what are you trying to do with your set up? it might help if you describe it.

well sometimes i get some Live recording gigs in my basement... and i wolud like to have more inputs.. so i can have separate tracks for more things...8 mics on drums, 2 guitars, and a bass.. thast 11 line ins i would like... it would give me more control while mixing.. i would rather not combine the toms or room mic with OH.. and i always use the pres on my digi.. so i only have 4 lines right now.. once again.. i could group diff. mics onto one track with my mixer.. but id rather not.

well here's one possible option. try looking into this new piece by M-Audio, its 8 mic pre or line level inputs, it will hook right into your 002 via adat lightpipe (giving you 8 more line/xlr, plus the 8 you already have with the 002)

with something like this, I would run all my drums through it and leave the 002 as your line level ins to use at your discretion (mainly for the rest of your guys you could even use the 4 002 mic pre's to mic up your guitars)

I know your budget is $400.00 but this thing goes for around $500.00ish, maybe one or two of your buds can kick in the extra?

there's also the Alesis AI3 (8 channel ada converter) goes for $399.00 and I hear its decent probably as good as the digi001 converters or slightly better. ... if you're looking into a standalone 8 channel adat converter with no xlr mic pre's, make sure that the unit will except line level/instrument inputs as many dont.
