Need help with mixing spoken word project...

Phildo

I heart guitars!
Just what it says on the tin, really.

Basically, I'm involved in a project which is aiming to result in a spoken word CD (over musical backings).

I recieve the rough versions of the tracks, with instrumental sketches and vocal parts as Cubase projects on DVD, so I then fire them up in my DAW and add whatever parts I feel like. As far as the vocals are concerned, they come to me already recorded, so I have to work with whatever quality I get - and they are pretty wildly different. Some are relatively well-recorded, others less so.

The problem I'm having is in keeping the vocal parts intelligible whilst at the same time making sure they still sound like a coherent part of the mix - there's a couple of rough mixes over at www.myspace.com/germanfilmstars ("The Plan" and "The Giants") to show what I'm on about.

So do any of you have any suggestions which might help me keep clarity and intelligibility without compromising the overall mixes?
