They shouldn't have jumped on you that much, it was a fair question. C3000 is low on the popularity list for vocals, and it is easy to do better. Vocal mics are tough because none of them works for all singers, or even a majority. Harvey listed some good ones. Here are my best bets:
Dirt cheap- Studio Projects B-1, Shure SM58, Marshall MXL V67, Oktava MK319
Still pretty cheap (under $200) AKG C2000B, CAD M-179
Mid Priced ($500 or less) Shure SM7B, Rode NTK, Studio Prijects C-3, T-3, B.L.U.E. Baby Bottle, Audio-Technica AT4033, 4044
Dirt cheap sleeper- AKG D320 series(a-b-c). You can often find these for $50 or less on ebay, and are a wicked 1980's era stage dynamic that rocks.
Every one of those mics is worth what you pay for it, and good on some vocalist..-Richie
For $300 (or less) I'd look at the AT 4040, the Marshall V69, the Shure KSM 27, the Rode NT 1000, the Studio Projects TB-1. I would try as many as I could before buying.
