jacks are female. plugs are male.

My sis is a music major at a Christian university. In one of her music tech classes, the prof was explaining cables. To demonstrate male and female he picks up a cable with one fem and one male end, and plugs the male end into the female end. Kristen said it was like lights came on for everyone..."oohhh...THAT's why they're called that..." hehehehehe
