multiple track nightmare

I'm recording a friend with a mondo-voice. Her vocals bleed all over her guitar tracks. Now I've got this great song with five tracks: three guitar tracks, one lead vocal and one harmony, in that order. Kicking up the other tracks to the level of her vocals made her sound like she's singing into a bucket. When I tried to sharpen her voice (with parametric EQ) the waveforms disappeared in the audio view of her track! Finally, I wiped her vocal track on playback to see what was going on and her lead vocal is still there on the other tracks! Wha's the deal? Where'd the data go?
Why does changing the other tracks put her voice in a bucket in the first place? Is there a better way to sharpen it? Help!

My guess is you've got phase issues...

...try a phase inverter on one or more tracks or you can try delaying the offending track by a few mS (relative to the other tracks) to see if it helps....
