multi-pattern?

Now this is a real simple question that will probably upset some people, but I havent found any good (simple) explanations while searching this site.
I just bought a multi-pattern LDC microphone. What is the difference btween the 3 patterns (omni, figure 8, cardiod), and which patterns are better for specific applications (ie: airy vocals, ACgtrs, electric gtrs, room sound)???

Very basically speaking....

Omni - captures sound from all around the mic

Cardioid - captures more from the front of the mic, rejects sound from rear of mic

Figure eight - captures from either side of the diaphragm. Can be used in conjuctiuon with a cardioid mic and a M-S matrix for stereo recording
