most underated song writer

I always thought JEFF LYNNE never got the recognition he deserved.

You say "Jeff Lynne" around people, even those from his period, they never heard of him. You say "ELO", they go "YEAH, I remember THEM!"... the BEST i can hope for is some people from the period remember he was the "lead singer" for ELO... most dont realize he pretty much *was* elo...

*shrugs* His range was from "full on progressive composer" to rock and ballads, clean into 80s stuff.

(I think I will always love "Ticket to the Moon".)

you can hear his major influence on Tom Petty when he started producing Petty, and was in the Wilburys too..

I'll just name a few bands. we (or at least most, know the main writers in them)
OLD:
Supertamp
April Wine
ELO
Badfinger
NEW:
Steven Wilson (porcupine tree, solo many others)
Opeth
Zakk Wylde... I know, I know..... but listen to Pride & Glory and Book of Shadows... AWESOME.

Trent Reznor

^that

his lyrics are some of the most brutally honest i've ever heard and he will be a continuing source of inspiration.

My personal most criminally overlooked songwriter list:

Donnie Vie
Andy Sturmer/Roger Manning (Individually, and as a team)
Ginger Wildheart
Rick Nielsen

I think Sixto Rodriguez is a bit underrated since it went 40 years until someone noticed him (except for south africa).
