More important than the gear?

Ok. I've been thinking about playing in the jazz band and stuff at my college, and tomorrow is my decision. Basically, I am getting $1000 in cash from it.

Anyway. If I go and spend some money on decent recording gear and what not.. Will it even matter? Sure I might could get a nice quality sound, but it seems like if I wasn't able to mix the stuff well, then it wouldn't matter.

I don't have a band to record with.. so its not like I would be recording drums and all this stuff at once. So I guess that makes it much easier to mix if I am just doing some personal kind of stuff with me and an acoustic, and maybe add some lead work to it and what not.

Would you guys suggest spending up to $1000 on recording gear without much knowledge of mixing and stuff? I have recorded with my basic soundcard and stuff, but the quality is never too good, so its hard to mix right.

Maybe I should just spend a few hundred on a decent setup? The Saffire LE has always grabbed my attention.

Anyway, just seeing what you guys think.
