Monitors, front or rear ported?

I was told front ported monitors are better if the monitor is close to a wall. Is this true and how much room do I need between the wall and the monitor?

My opinion is your monitors should be on a median plaine with your ears in equilateral triangle of about 6'- 7'. Stay about 2' or so off the walls and definately out of the corners with the speakers. About the only exception I can think of is soffit mounting monitors flush into the wall but that's another subject.

No ported speaker is good next to a wall, but front ports would be better in that situation. The bummer about front ports is the port noise can screw with you.

I have no choice really but to have my monitors near the wall (about 1') at least if I want to have any room to move in here.

My mains are sealed boxes, they actually work well next to the wall. My nears however have rear-firing ports, so I simply plugged 'em with some dense foam. They don't go down quite as far now, but the bass that is there is much tighter.
