I finally got some nearfield monitors (Yorkville YSM-1's) and a cheap amp to power them (Electar 200 from Musicyo, until I can afford that Hafler). When I turn the amp off I get a fairly loud pop on the monitors, even when I turn the volume knobs on the amp down and turn everything else off (mixer, rack gear, etc. I've noticed that the load protection light comes on when this happens (even though the amp is now off).
Why am I getting this pop? Could this damage the speakers?
