Monitor Grills

Why does everyone keep the speaker grills off of their monitors? I have a pair of Wharfedale 8.2's that came with speaker grills. I have pretty much left them on so far to protect the speakers from dust and a cat named Blue.
Is there a disadvantage to leaving them on? I notice that most every picture I see of a studio has a pair of monitors with the speakers exposed. Should I be mixing with them off?

BTW I did do a search. :p

I think mostly 'cause it looks cool, though I'll bet there are cases where the grill is not 100% acoustically transparent. I have the grills off of my Wharfey 8.2s, NS-10s and Minimus 7s.
