Please check it out and help me figure out how to get a more high fi sound. I wrote and performed it too (except the drum loops), so feedback on the song structure, performance, etc., is also appreciated.

The uploader won't let me attach it because it is apparently too large at 2.7 MB, so please get it from my soundclick page at the link in my sig.

What are you using to record?

Logic allows you to use a multipressor and virtual Bass DI amps to fatten the bass.

And it allows a sub-bass option too which I like to use on the kick drum in my mixes.

I'm using protools le 6.1.1 and an original mbox to record. I'm recording the bass direct and compressing it in the DAW. I didn't apply any eq to it, becasue it sounded ok to me in the uncompressed mix. But the level of the mix is so low, and there are some ridiculous transients, so when I normalize to 0db the mix is still too low to hear on standard equipment. I think it becomes unbalanced when I compress and limit the mix to make it loud enough to play on normal equipment. I had to use the reverse compression technique and normalize several times.

WOW. Are these lyrics real? :P

That aside, the guitar lick isn't quite "in the pocket" with the drums. It is kind of ruining the "funk" effect. It's most apparent during the "more funk please" parts of the chorus, because the guitar doesn't stop quite in sync with the drums and bass.

on a side note:

LMAO at nomnomnomurmom hahahahaha

The best part of the song is the drums and bass, the bass has to come up. The jumbled lyric is too much, you could use it, but I'd write some kind of other vocal part especially in the beginning. The guitar sounds like its about 1/32 a beat ahead are you sure its sync'ed right ? Its a bit loud also. I like the overall creativity of it, but I think you could make it better. Enjoyed listening.

OK, here is a remix of it. I basically just mastered the stems using parallel compression and eq, and mixed down.

I then tried making that remix louder using compressors and limiters and such, but the result was very bad. It sounded worse than the previous result, plus it was not as loud.

So I imported the remix into a new session, applied a top shelf boost, and used a trim plugin on the master to jack the volume WAY up into the red until I started to actually HEAR clipping, and then backed off a little. The result is the loudest mix I've ever produced, and I think it sounds a lot better than the previous one. I replaced the version on my soundclick page with the new version.

The previous version can be found at the top of this thread: Moar Funk Pleez - Home Recording Forum

Please compare the previous version with this new version (also now on my soundclick page at the link below in my sig) and let me have your thoughts.

I thought the snare was a little loud and the fx on the vocals made it hard to hear the lyrics also the guitar was kinda quiet i thought, but i enjoyed the song...maybe just some more polish could help the mix

I can't work out what's FX & what's an artifact of the massive compression to make such a small file.
The limit for the forum is 10meg.
Lyrics are fine - listen to Mary Provost by Nick Lowe for more & earlier of the same idea.
No real bottom end in the file. You really should try for a 320 or something that approaches reasonable quality.
Guitar solo too loud.
Timbali or snare - too loud.
Guitar not quite there synch wise.
Overall reminds me of the Tom Tom Club.
One BIG problem is how BLOODY loud the thing is. DON'T normalize. Work on the internal volume relationship & then turn it up some but stay well below -3. Wow, ear fatigue or what?

I'm not sure why, but I can't post anything over 2 megs. Maybe it's privilege of having 6,000+ posts that allows you to post larger files. What mp3 converter do you use? Is there a free one you would recommend?

I don't know what you mean by a 320.

Guitar solo too loud.

Some others have given me the opposite opinion on that.

Timbali or snare - too loud.

I'm not sure what do do about that. I'm working with professional drum loops I purchased, and I can't manipulate the snare alone. Do you think the whole drum track could come down, or must I use automation to bring down the snare? [/quote]

Guitar not quite there synch wise.

Do you mean the the rhythm guitar or bass guitar?

Some have told me the guitar is too early, and other too late. I don't know what to think.

I did not normalize this one at all. I just used a limiter. As far as it being too loud, I compare it to modern professional releases and it seems to be about the same loudness. I know there are a lot of people who think people should just turn the volume up and down all the time, but I'm one of those lazy people with busy hands, and I want my songs to sit in a playlist together with today's professional recordings. This is not intended to be a mix to send to a master. It's just intended to be an amateur recording that will be distributed for free over the internet. I'm still trying to figure out how to get it this loud without any significant problems, and if you have any suggestions for doing that myself, I'd appreciate hearing them.

There's a prob at present with the arrangements for <10meg uploads but they're working on it. In the interim you should post a link to the soundclick streamer of the song. You can also upload to Mega or similar hosting sites. Having a streaming version of a song will be a help as it's less time spent waiting by the listener.
320 - an MP3 ripped to 320 is about 40% bigger than a 192 but infinitely better quality with fewer artifacts.
It is only an opinion. That's the reason you posted right? You want a variety of opinions don't you?
You're using a loop but you can play with MBcompression & EQ to manage the problem to some extent.
Rhythm Git. Solo the drums & guitar & listen.
Brick wall limiting is pretty aggressive and can be nasty - which is where yours is at present.
You want it to sit in a play list with others & be heard to be the same volume - OK, but you don't want it mastered etc, OK, but but but - being lazy & busy isn't going to make it good. there are ways of getting volume via limiters/compressors that aren't too brutal.
Do a search or two in the mastering & mixing sections of the forum. Read the stickies in the newbie section too.
You need to spend the time I'm afraid. There are no simple solutions.

I'm trying to post a streaming version.

SoundClick artist: tonesponge - page with MP3 music downloads is good - allows download or stream.
You can get the hi or lo or both links from the "new band administration" page. You go to you admin page & in the URL section it has a blue link to link/embed tool. THat's where you get it!
It's easier to find in the OLD band admin section.
Here's a link I took from my link/embed page for my latest track. clicking it should cause the streamer to pop up straight away.

Thanks.

A few days apart from the song let me revisit the mix, see what people were talking about, and produce this new mix.

I think it's a lot better, and I'm probably going to move on to something else from here. Thanks for all your help, everybody.

That's truly awful.

Stop worrying about loudness and how many plug-ins you can use and do worry about making a better mix. This is harsh and one-dimensional. You can't compete with professional mastering done by professional mastering engineers, so don't try. It just sounds bad. A good mix that's a little "quieter" than modern CD's will sound much better. A limiter is just a heavy duty compressor. Learn what these effects do and why before you go slamming your mixes throuigh them.

Yeah the limited version sounds worse than the non-limited version.

I liked the guitar tone.

The bass is too loud. the little riff at 1:56 distorts like crazy. I'm hearing a ton of distortion in the section after that. And that's in the non-mastered version. I liked the lead playing there though.

I'd just keep the vocals dry for now. The effect on them doesn't help the song at all.

TY. That's a LP through superfuzz pedal clone into a bassman clone on the lead guitar. The clean guitar is a strat relic through a crybaby into a pro junior.

That's the superfuzz pedal applied to the bass guitar for that riff. I added it in parallel to the clean bass guitar.

I'm hearing a ton of distortion in the section after that.

Guess what that is. Yep, the superfuzz pedal. What can I say? I got a new toy.

Your mixes are pretty loud while retaining clarity. Do you pay to have them all professionally mastered? If not, what do you do to get them loud?

I appreciate the compliment, but I'm not gonna tell you what I do. I fear you're just gonna try it yourself, and keep making bad loud mixes. I don't pay for anything, and never will. I do everything myself. You can too. My "mastered" mixes don't compete with modern pro loudness though. If I can help you with anything, I'd like to help you make better mixes, which will make your loud squashes sound better and more cohesive. You're putting the cart before the horse. Forget loudness. Make a good mixes first.
