ive been recording using pro tools for a couple months now and my quality has improved from my previous program. but my recordings have basically been raw up until now. i was wondering if there was a book or a good online tutorial that you would recommend on mixing. ive played around with the plug ins but i'd like to learn more in depth about what the plug ins do and how i should use them

When I was searching only last summer, I heard good things about this book:

The S.M.A.R.T. Guide to Mixing and Mastering Audio Recordings (S.M.A.R.T. Guide To...) (Paperback)
by Bill A. Gibson (Author)
Mixing and Mastering

Now that I've had the chance to read it and use some of the techniques, I'm very happy with my recordings.

Many plug-ins are platform related so I just dug into my Logic doc.

There's a 3-book series by Bobby Owsinski consisting of The Recording Engineer's Handbook, The Mixing Engineer's Handbook and The Mastering Engineer's Handbook. Each book can be found on amazon for around a tenner or so :P
