Mixing midi-based Apple Loops (GarageBand)... making it sound "alive"

This is my first recording project using GrageBand, I have all my tracks down, now I'm in my mixing stage.

All my drums tracks are from the midi-based drum loops that was bundled in GarageBand Some edited, some not.

Problem is, the drums sound flat/lifeless/sterile, no matter what I do with it - I've controled the velocity of each hit, I've messed with comp, reverb, I've separeted them in different tracks & panned.

So people help me out here, are there any tricks/techniques/guidelines you use to make midi/loop drums "come to life"? I'm not saying it needs to sound like a real drummer, it's just that I've heard midi drums sound alot more dynamic than what I hear from my song.

Try some different drum samples, if you tried all that and they still suck, then it must be the samples.

Get a midi drum program like Superior Drummer. Insert that instead of the garage band generator. You can keep the midi tracks as is. Design your own kick, tom, snare and cymbal sounds to taste.
