How to mike UDU-drum, the clay thing, in live situations?
Thank´s Matti

I would throw a condenser about 3" away from the mouth (the top part) and make sure it's of center and at an angle - an udu can move a lot of air. If you wanted to be really thorough, you could stick another mic, probably a dynamic, a few inches away from the (other) hole to get the "hand slap" sound. That should do it. Live recording for something like an udu is tough - they really need some space to develop their sound. In a studio situation I would mic them from about 3 or 4 feet away in a good sounding room. For live though, that would lead to way too much bleed through. Whatever you decide, let me know how it goes incase I ever decide to play my udu live.
