MIDI sync with Otari 8 track

I'm planning on the 8 track, and want it to be the master when syncing to a fostex d1624. It's been a long while since I dealt with this - so I need a sync box, then I stripe track 8 with smpte. I take the track 8 ouput into the sync box? Or is there another connection that needs to be on the otari itself???
