midi newbie (can you believe that lol) needs help with midi-in

What is the fastest midi connection to record realtime midi synth via Sonar dx instruments? I am building a DAW and must pick a midi input either through a usb midi connection, a usb connected soundcardsetup, or a pci based soundcard with midi input via breakout box. I need something fast but no frills as I only plan to use an old Seiko DS-250 (15 yrs old ?!?) or if necesarry a small INEXPENSIVE midi piano.

I don't think there will be any significant difference between any of these approaches.

What's important is that the soundcard playing the DXi has WDM drivers and that the latency is set low enough so that the response is good.
