Mic to PC

Hello all, I've got a pretty dumb question so bare with me.

I was wondering what the simplest way to connect a mic to a PC was. I have a computer mic that can record stuff but I mean a mic like this: http://www.shure.com/photos/bigones/sm86_large.jpg

How would I go about hooking that up to my computer? I'm guessing I would have to run it through some other device and connect that device to my CPU, but uh what would that device be?
Please explain in detail if you can.

Thanks in advance.

that device is a preamplifier. you can get a stand-alone unit, or they are also typically built into mixers.

microphone -> preamp -> computer's line in

Ahh thats what a preamp does...

Of course I knew that. :rolleyes:

Any suggestion on a good preamp that is somewhat inexpensive?

BTW, thanks for the fast reply!

The M-Audio Audiobuddy ($79) seems to be favored by many. http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp?ProductCode=10658&Category=Audio_Processors

Or you can buy a cheap Behringer mixer.

If you have a GC near you, you could probably get the Audiobuddy's bigger brother, the DMP3 for around $175. That's the route I'd take. The DMP3 clips I've heard have been very nice.
