Mic Pres For Xmas????

Hey im tryin to get the best mic pre for a relativly cheap price. im getting a shure sm58 microphone and want to set it up the best i can. Right now i have a yamaha mic going into my gemini umx-7 (scratch/battle mixer) and the output of that into my soundblaster live soundcard. so i guess theres only room to go up in mic audio quality. Also do i have this right? the mic will go into the pre amp and the pre amp will be able to go into the soundcard? i dont want to get some gear and find out im missing a link
