mic positioning

i see alot of posts about mic positioning...i can fool around and get the acoustic guitar to sound good, but i havent gotten around to messing with vocals...with a condenser mic, do you just get right up next to it when singing vocals, or do you back away, or is it just preference, and if it is, i would appreciate how some of you guys record the vocals with a condenser
thanks!

Most broadcast and voiceover is done with the mic at 10 ro 2 o'clock position, occasionally straight on, with the mic at nose level pointing slichtly down and no pop filter about 8 to 10 inches away, slightly more if the voice has natural low resonances and does not need proximity effect. Most singing is done straight on with a pop filter at about the same distance depending on whether proximity effect is desired.
